3 Easy Hot Tub Maintenance Tips For 3 Person Hot Tubs

OUR HOT TUB BLOG

Regular hot tub care is essential if you want your two-person Jacuzzi to keep running like new for years. Without proper maintenance, even the best 2-person hot tub won’t be able to operate as efficiently and as long as possible.

Here are a few easy maintenance tips that will help you keep your 2-3 person hot tub in pristine condition!

1. Test your hot tub water weekly

One of the most important things that you can do for your 2-3 person hot tub is to test the water at least two or three times a week or every day if you use it on a daily basis. By keeping the water well balanced, you will also prolong the life span of your hot tub and save money over the long haul.

Just because your water looks crystal clear, it doesn’t mean that it is properly balanced. The only way to avoid peaks and valleys of water balance and sanitation is to perform a hot tub water test.

Take this maintenance task seriously because unbalanced water can make your skin itchy, irritate your eyes and dry out your hair. To keep your hot tub water safe and clean, make sure that all the chemicals in your Jacuzzi are at the proper levels.

Use test strips or a test kit to test pH and chlorine or bromine levels, as well as calcium hardness. The ideal pH range for hot tubs is between 7.2 and 7.8, while your chlorine level should be between 3 and 5 mg/l. In case you use bromine to sanitize your water, keep the bromine level between 3 and 6mg/l.

Don’t forget to check the total alkalinity every time you add fresh water. The ideal total alkalinity level is between 80 and 120 ppm (parts per million).

There are also non-chlorine shock treatments that decrease irritating water contaminants and eliminate odors. Add an oxidizer to your hot tub each week to break up the organic compounds and improve comfort and hygiene.

2. Clean the filter every week

A clean hot tub filter cartridge is key to maintaining proper levels of chemicals in the water. If you clean your filters every week and change them each year or when they show signs of damage or wear, you will limit bacteria growth and increase the life of your other hot tub components.

Turn the hot tub system off and remove your hot tub filter cartridge. To make sure that you remove it correctly, consult the owner’s manual. Rinse the filter out with a cleaning wand that attaches to your garden hose. Examine the filter for damage and larger debris particles.

Also, for a more thorough cleaning, once a month, clean the filter with a cleaner that is designed for cartridge hot tub filters.

3. Drain, clean, and refill your hot tub every 3-4 months

Many hot tub owners think that the frequency of draining and refilling their hot tub is only related to the frequency of usage. This, however, isn’t the only factor you should take into consideration.

The type and quality of water, your filtration and purification system, as well as the quality of chemicals you use also play a role in determining how often you should change the water in your hot tub or spa.

Generally, it’s optimal to drain, clean and refill a hot tub at least every 3-4 months. Also, you’ll know it’s time to change the water in your tub if you notice that your water has become cloudy or foamy and shocking it or adding a water defoamer doesn’t seem to help.
